Mom says daughter called out in front of class over her hair

LYNWOOD, Calif. (FOX 11) - A mother is speaking out and demanding an apology, after she says her 6-year-old daughter, Kayla, was called out by her male teacher in front of the class earlier this week.

Sara Stallworth says her daughter was told by the teacher in front of her first grade class at Lindbergh Elementary School, not to wear barrettes in her hair because they make too much noise.

Stallworth says her daughter was so upset by what happened, that she tried to cut off her braids.

She contacted the principal and wrote a letter to the district.

She says, "He should have talked to the parents. He should never address a personal issue with a child."

Stallworth says the principal told her he would deal with the situation, and Kayla was taken out of that classroom and placed with a new teacher. But Stallworth says all she really wants, is an apology.

FOX 11 tried to contact the principal but was told he wasn't available.

The Lynwood Unified School District gave a written statement that says in part: "Recently, a parent presented concerns about her child's right to self-expression. Upon hearing the parent's concern, we took immediate action and provided an appropriate resolution."

Stallworth adds, "Really I just want him to apologize to my child in front of the classroom... Because it was said in front of the class which hurt her self esteem that she felt she had to pick up a pair of scissors and cut her hair."
