Missing hiker in Angeles National Forest found safe

LOS ANGELES (FOX 11) - After an overnight search Monday for a hiker reported missing in the Angeles National Forest, officials said he was found alive.

The 65-year-old was reported missing after being separated from his adult son around 4 p.m. Sunday while hiking in the Red Box Canyon picnic area.

About two hours into the hike, the man apparently became tired and told his son to go ahead and they would catch up on the way back down, officials said.

The son told authorities he didn't run into his father on the way down. The man was said to be carrying a cell phone, but reception is bad to "non-existent" in the area.

The Montrose Search and Rescue team spent the night searching for him with temperatures dipping down to 40 degrees.

The hiker said after taking a wrong turn, he became lost and found a sleeping bag to use as shelter for the night.

At sunrise Monday, he was able to hike out, officials said.
