Man injured after encountering bear in backyard of Sierra Madre home

A man got quite a surprise when he spotted two bears in Sierra Madera.

Police and Animal Control responded to a home in the area of Auburn and Hermosa Avenues around 2:40 p.m. Monday.

The Department of Fish and Wildlife says a man in his 50's spotted the momma bear and her cub in his backyard.

According to officials the dog barked and the mama bear, trying to protect her baby, reached out towards the dog. Officials tell us the man then tried to grab his dog and was injured by the bear.

The Sierra Madre Police Department says the man had some scratches on his left and right calves and was possibly bitten on the inside of his right knee

The mama bear and the cub were eventually tranquilized and put on the bed of a pickup truck.

The dog was taken to a vet.
