Mail trucks stolen from post office in Acton; thieves lead police on chase

Two mail trucks were stolen Monday from the U.S. Postal Service facility in Acton, but were recovered a short time later.

The master key to the Acton community mailboxes was also stolen during the burglary, which occurred between 1 a.m. and 3:45 a.m. at the post office in the 3632 Smith Ave., according to Deputy Jodi Wolfe of the sheriff's Palmdale Station.

One of the trucks was chased by deputies and crashed in the area of Shannondale Road and Sierra Highway, news outlets reported.

Soon after the crash, the driver got into a dark Ford Mustang that was also chased by deputies before the pursuit was called off, according to the station, which reported that the second truck was found in the area of Escondido Canyon and Jones Canyon roads.

Residents were urged to report all suspicious activity at community mailboxes to the Palmdale Station, which can be reached at (661) 272-2400.
