LAPD officers fatally shoot armed suspect linked to South LA gas station shooting

A large police presence stretched across multiple blocks in South Los Angeles early Friday morning after a fatal officer-involved shooting. 

Investigators say the shooting happened after officers tracked down a suspect connected to an earlier shooting at a nearby gas station. 

What we know:

The Los Angeles Police Department confirms a fatal officer-involved shooting occurred near West 112th Street and Van Buren Avenue.

According to the LAPD, officers were initially dispatched just before 1 a.m. Friday to a report of a person shot at a gas station near Vermont Avenue and Imperial Highway.

About 10 minutes later, officers located the suspected gunman a few blocks away near 112th Street and Vermont Avenue.

Police say the suspect was armed with a handgun when officers engaged, resulting in the fatal shooting.

The Los Angeles County Fire Department responded to the scene, where the suspect was pronounced dead. 

Police say the officer-involved shooting is connected to the earlier shooting at the gas station.

No officers were injured.

Investigation underway

Under department policy, the LAPD’s Force Investigation Division is leading the investigation, gathering evidence and reviewing the actions of the officers involved.

The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office will also conduct an independent review to determine whether the use of deadly force was legally justified.

An LAPD command post has been set up in the area as detectives continue to interview witnesses and collect evidence tied to both the gas station shooting and the officer-involved shooting.

What we don't know:

Authorities have not released the identity of the suspect who was killed.

It's also unclear what led up to the initial shooting at the gas station and whether the suspected gunman opened fire at officers.
