How Californians could fireproof homes before LA wildfires

As displaced residents still reeling from the wildfires start to think about a rebuild, FOX 11 spoke with experts on how we can fireproof our homes.

CEO of IR Architects, Ignacio Rodriguez, is a pro at it when it comes to architecture and interior design. As SkyFOX flew over the Pacific Palisades and Malibu, eight of the nine homes that the IR Architects were responsible for ended up surviving the Jan. 2025 fire.

"Windows and doors are probably your biggest vulnerability because once fire gets in your house," Rodriguez said. "Your couches, your rugs, your drapes, your linens, you know, everything is going to catch on fire. So you really got to try to keep the fire outside. And that's where windows and doors are extremely important."

Also paramount – your yard.

"Make sure your furniture, your outside furniture, your yards are clean, not just from leaves and stuff like that, but like the sofa as the chairs, any toys, structures, anything like that," Rodriguez adds. "Has to be away from your home."

Ignacio and his firm are also offering free consultations to homeowners who want to rebuild. Those looking to check out their work can click here.
