High-speed chase ends after multiple shootings near East LA

Five people were in custody after two shootings, one of them fatal, and a high-speed chase that ended in Downey, police said.

Los Angeles County Sheriff's deputies were initially called around 12:30 a.m. Friday to the 4300 block of Whittier Boulevard in East Los Angeles on a report of a shooting.

Arriving deputies found a man with at least one gunshot wound, authorities said. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigators said the man was believed to have been riding his bike when a vehicle pulled up and opened fire on the victim.

Shortly after, another shooting was reported near the area of South McBride Avenue and Telegraph Road in East Los Angeles, authorities said.

Deputies attempted to make a traffic stop of a vehicle matching the description of one connected to the shootings, and a pursuit began.

The suspects crashed near the 9200 block of Samoline Avenue in Downey, authorities said. Deputies arrested three males and two females. Two of the five people were described as juveniles.

The incidents remained under investigation.
