Girl struck by bullet while sleeping in her apartment
DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. - A 10-year-old girl will remain in the hospital for at least a day after she was shot at a DeKalb County apartment complex.
DeKalb County Police said 10-year-old Shamaria Harris was asleep in her bed at the Oak Forest apartments located on Hatton Drive Wednesday night when she was wounded.
Investigators said an argument broke out in the parking lot and escalated to shots being fired.
Police said over 15 shots were fired.
One of the bullets struck the 5th grader in her arm.
Medics rushed Shamaria to Children's Healthcare of Atlanta at Egleston where she remained Thursday afternoon.
The girl's mother Numanikie Harris told FOX 5's Portia Bruner that her daughter will stay in the hospital until at least Friday.
Doctors told her that the bullet is still lodged in the girl's right forearm.
The mother said her daughter's spirits are down because she is in a hospital bed and can barely move her arm.
Ms. Harris said Shamaria has already asked her if they can move after she's released from the hospital.
The mother said the 5th grader at Avondale Elementary School loves school and is sad she can't go to class.
Police have not yet released the suspected circumstances surrounding the argument.
It was not immediately clear if anyone was in custody.
The mother asks, "Why? Why do these kids have to keep shooting at each other where innocent kids stay?"
