Deputy-involved shooting in Lomita; Suspect hospitalized

A 30-year-old man is undergoing surgery after he was shot by sheriff's deputies who said the man fired at them first Thursday evening.

Lt. John Corina said the suspect is expected to survive and a female suspect has been detained for questioning.

Corina said, the incident began around 6 o'clock Thursday evening when sheriff's deputies from the Lomita station attempted to stop the man driving a 4-door-Volvo sedan for a traffic violation.

That's when, deputies said the man tried to drive away winding his way through the narrow street that make up the neighborhood.

When he drove down a cul-de-sac, the driver made a sharp u-turn clipping one of the deputy vehicles.

Deputies said, the man appeared to not know where he was going so he drove into a liquor store parking lot where he crashed the Volvo.

Then, the male driver got out of the car and ran into the liquor store while the female passenger took off on foot down PCH.

Deputies said the man then exited the liquor store and began firing shots from a handgun at deputies.

Corina said, at least two shots were fired by the suspect and two deputies from the Lomita station returned fire striking him.

The suspect was taken to the hospital and is currently undergoing surgery.

Deputies caught up with the female passenger and have detained her for further questioning.

The northbound lane Pacific Coast Highway was closed between Pennsylvania and Cypress while investigators processed the scene.

No deputies were hurt in the shooting.
