Crews work to restore power for thousands in LA amid heat wave
LOS ANGELES (CNS) - Weather-related outages plagued the Southland for a third day Friday as crews worked overnight to restore power to thousands of residents across Los Angeles County.
Los Angeles Department of Water and Power officials said demand on the utility's electrical grid reached a record level Thursday, hitting 6,502 megawatts, when temperatures climbed into the high 90s and 100s, prompting utility officials to encourage residents to conserve power as much as possible. The previous peak demand of 6,396 megawatts was set on Sept. 16, 2014.
Department of Water and Power crews were working this morning to restore power to more than 1,900 customers in the Los Feliz area and more than 700 customers in Reseda, with hundreds more affected in their service area.
In county areas outside of Los Angeles, more than 14,000 Southern California Edison customers will be waking up without power, including 2,500- plus customers in Temple City and a little more than 2,200 customers in Monterey Park.
The California Independent System Operator, which manages the state's power grid, has issued a Flex Alert -- calling for voluntary conservation to prevent outages -- that will be in effect from 1 to 10 p.m.
