Katherine has a rare disorder named Maroteaux-Lamy syndrome, which can make it hurt to move and causes heart problems. The disorder occurs in only one in every 250,000 to 600,000 people.

Katherine has to have lengthy weekly visits to Piedmont Athens Regional, and the staff has gotten to know and love her, a spokeswoman for the hospital said. So when they heard Katherine was about to have her 12th birthday, the hospital wanted to make it as special as possible.

Last week, the hospital and Cosplay Volunteers of Atlanta teamed up to give Katherine the best birthday ever, surprising her with a magical princess-filled party.

When Katherine arrived for her treatment, she found that she had some special visitors - The Mad Hatter, Cinderella, Alice from "Alice in Wonderland," and Ariel.

The group played games and drew with Katherine while she received her treatment, making this a birthday she'll always remember.

From all of us at FOX 5 Atlanta, happy birthday Katherine!
