Armed robbery suspect killed in officer-involved shooting in Long Beach

LONG BEACH, Calif. (FOX 11) - An armed man wanted for a series of armed robberies in Long Beach was fatally shot in an officer-involved shooting at a 7-Eleven, authorities say.

Detectives were conducting surveillance of a Nissan Altima believed to have been used in several robberies earlier this week when they saw the armed man get out of the car and walk into the convenience store in the 5100 block of East Pacific Coast Highway around 11:30 p.m. Thursday, according to the Long Beach Police Department.

"Detectives proceeded to enter the business and directed the suspect to drop his firearm multiples times,'' according to a police statement. "The suspect failed to comply, and an officer-involved shooting occurred.''

Life-saving measures were performed on the suspect until Long Beach fire paramedics arrived and pronounced him dead at the scene, police said. His name was withheld, pending notification of relatives.

Another man who was in the Nissan was taken into custody, police said. His name was not immediately released.

No injuries were reported to any officers or anyone inside the business.

Authorities closed Pacific Coast Highway between Anaheim Street and Granada and Clark avenues between Anaheim and Atherton streets while an investigation was conducted.

"The Altima is believed to have been involved in multiple armed robberies and one attempted robbery in the city of Long Beach and additional armed robberies outside of the city within the last week,'' police said.

The crimes in Long Beach occurred at the following times and locations:

-- on Sunday, there were four crimes in a short period of time: about 9:55 p.m. in the 3300 block of Orange Avenue, about 10 p.m. in the 3400 block of Long Beach Boulevard, about 10:10 p.m. in the 4200 block of Long Beach Boulevard, and about 10:20 p.m. in the 5000 block of Long Beach Boulevard;

-- on Monday about 11 p.m. in the 4800 block of Bellflower Boulevard; and

-- on Tuesday about 10 p.m. in the 200 block of West Willow Avenue.
