Armed man barricaded in Pico Rivera home for hours taken into custody
(FOX 11/CNS) - An armed man who shot at deputies while barricaded inside a home in Pico Rivera for about 26 hours was taken into custody Monday.
The standoff began at 2:12 p.m. Sunday when authorities responded to a call reporting an assault with a deadly weapon at a home in the 8800 block of Dalewood Avenue, said sheriff's Deputy Stephanie Navarro.
The home is in a subdivision three blocks north of Telegraph Road and one block west of the San Gabriel River flood control channel.
Special Enforcement Bureau deputies and a crisis negotiation team were summoned, but the standoff continued until about 1:20 p.m. Monday, when the man -- identified as 31-year-old Michael Anthony Jewell -- was taken into custody, according to the sheriff's department.
Jewell fired on deputies and their equipment during the standoff. He was initially believed to be holding his mother at gunpoint, but later reports indicated that she may not have been held against her will.
The woman came out of the residence about 8 a.m. Monday.
She was treated for the effects of tear gas that had been introduced into the home, but appeared to be otherwise unharmed. She was detained pending further investigation, authorities said.
A high-caliber firearm was recovered during a search of the house, according to the sheriff's department.
Jewell will be booked on suspicion of several felonies, including assault with a deadly weapon, assault on a peace officer and resisting arrest.
Deputies evacuated surrounding homes for safety during the standoff, according to the sheriff's department.
