1-year-old boy fatally struck by vehicle in Long Beach

A 1-year-old boy was struck and killed by a vehicle Saturday night in North Long Beach.

The accident happened around 8 p.m. in the area of Lei Drive and Polynesian Drive.   

According to the Long Beach Police Department, the little boy and his father just got dropped off at their home by a rideshare driver.

Police say as the two exited the vehicle, the father became distracted and the boy ran in front of the vehicle. The driver pulled away from the curb, failing to see the child in front and accidently hit him.

The driver remained on scene.

"It appears it was a tragic accident at this point," said Long Beach Police Lt. Megan Zabel. 

The child was taken to the hospital where he later died.
