1 dead, suspected supplier arrested after 4 men overdose in Newport Beach

An Aliso Viejo man was in custody Saturday after he allegedly supplied the drug that four men overdosed on at a Newport Beach night club, including one who later died.

The fatality was identified as Ahmed Said, 25, of Santa Ana, according to the coroner's office.

Newport Beach Fire Department paramedics went to American Junkie in the 2400 block of Newport Boulevard early Friday in response to calls that four men were in distress, Battalion Chief Jeff Boyles told a videographer at the scene. Some of the patients were in respiratory arrest and given oxygen, he said.

"They took something to suppress their respiratory drive,'' Boyles said.

All four were taken to hospitals for treatment, according to Newport Beach police Lt. Jeff Brower.

Said, who was rushed to Huntington Beach Hospital, was pronounced dead at 7:20 a.m. Friday, according to the coroner's office.

At 8:45 p.m. Friday, police arrested Sean Robert McLaughlin, 42, at his Aliso Viejo home on suspicion of involuntary manslaughter.

The investigation revealed the narcotic the men took was obtained from McLaughlin, Brower said. He was reportedly an employee at the night club.

Search warrants were served at McLaughlin's home and at the club, Brower said, in the search for more evidence. The investigation was ongoing.
