Fundraiser for family that lost 6 members in Houston flood
(FOX 11) - It was a week ago. The rain was falling. Flood waters were rising. The Saldivar kids Devyn, Dominic, Xavier, and Daisy were scared. So were their great grandma Bellia and great grandpa Emanuel. With an uncle, they jumped into a cargo van and tried to find safer ground. The kid's mom, Blanca Saldivar went looking for them but lost contact with the kids, grandparents and the uncle.
Blanca says, "It was impossible to get there. The waters were really really high." Sadly, all but the uncle drowned. The uncle got away. Daniel Saldivar, the kids' grandfather and the uncle's brother, says what happened was terrifying.
Of his brother, Daniel says, "...he barely got out of an open window of the truck. He tried to rescue the other people but the water was way too swift and he was hanging on to them… all the kids were screaming in the back and that's the last thing he remembers." In the days since Daniel says his younger brother has been devastated. Says Saldivar, "We told our brother it's just a tragic accident. He was suicidal for awhile and calmed him down and got him to where he's okay."
At the Principe De Paz Church in North Houston men, women and teens were all chipping in to help raise money for the Saldivar family… to help them bury the kids and great grandparents.
Meanwhile, the distraught mother says, she "still can't believe it. Never thought something like that would happen to me."
Dealing with such a traumatic situation is understandably tough. She says to get through, "We all have to support each other. Right now we're going through roller coasters. One minute we're okay and then another we'll start thinking about the kids and we'll start crying all over again."
On GoFundMe.com the family is accepting donations under the "Saldivar Memorial Fund."
