Women pulled from burning car after crashing into building in Fullerton

Two women were pulled from a burning vehicle by bystanders early Wednesday in Fullerton after it slammed into a building and erupted in flames, authorities said.

The crash was reported at about 2:40 a.m. on South Brookhurst Road near the intersection of Orangethorpe Avenue. A car headed northbound on Brookhurst Road crashed into a business with a female driver and female passenger inside, Fullerton fire officials said.

Flames broke out and bystanders rushed to help the women inside the vehicle.

A witness said the driver was pulled out of a back window and carried across the street. According to the witness, the driver then took off on foot but was later located.

The second passenger was also pulled out of the vehicle.

Both women were rushed to nearby hospitals with "mild to moderate" injuries, but were expected to survive, authorities said. A fire chief said the women were lucky to be alive, thanks to the bystanders at the scene.

The cause of the crash was not immediately clear.
