Woman killed in big rig hit-and-run in Boyle Heights

A woman was killed Thursday night when she was run over by a big rig while looking under the truck for a pet that got loose in Boyle Heights.

The fatality was reported around 10 p.m. in the area of Union Pacific Avenue and Calzona Street, according to Sgt. Roy Escalante of the Los Angeles Police Department's Central Traffic Bureau.

The woman, who lived in a motorhome near the industrial area, was looking for a lost pet when she was run over by an 18-wheeler, Escalante said. The truck left the scene.

Police were trying to figure out how the fatality happened and if the driver knew the truck ran over someone or if this is a hit-and-run crash, Escalante said.

Investigators were working to track down the truck late Thursday night.
