West Covina K-9 officer 'Rocky' honored for takedown

The Riverside County Animal Shelter break-in story struck a chord with thousands of people across the southland. But so did the video of a police K-9 that took down a suspect wanted for shooting a CHP officer last week...the video went viral!

Gigi Graciette was in West Covina with K-9 officer 'Rocky'.

Thirty-year-old John Garcia of Fontana is accused of attempted murder, assaulting a peace officer with a firearm and fleeing the crime scene. The Los Angeles County district attorney's office announced the charges Tuesday.

CHP spokesman Officer Jose Barrios says Officer Felix Serpas pulled over Garcia, who had been weaving through traffic in West Covina in an SUV on Friday. He says Garcia shot and injured Serpas as he approached the car.

Garcia then led officers on a nearly one-hour chase that ended with his arrest when Rocky the West Covina K-9 officer took him down.

If convicted, Garcia faces a maximum sentence of 40 years to life in state prison.

It is unclear whether Garcia has obtained an attorney.
