VIDEO: Brawl at high school football game result in forfeits for Riverside Notre Dame, St. Paul

(FOX 11) - The brawl took place last Friday night when Riverside Notre Dame hosted Santa Fe Springs St. Paul in a non-league football game at Riverside City College.

Saint Paul High are in the white jerseys. Midway through the third quarter some pushing and shoving turned into punches thrown and helmets getting ripped off.

The referees immediately stopped the game.

Now, CIA Southern Section officials have announced that Saint Paul will forfeit that game and this week's game against rival bishop Amat.

Officials say so many Saint Paul players faced one-game suspensions for leaving the bench that they would not be able to field a team.

The number of suspensions from last Friday's brawl left both teams without the minimum number of players eligible to play a game, causing both to forfeit their next scheduled game.

Notre Dame Principal Matthew Luttringer released a statement through the school on Sunday:

"What occurred at the game was not at all a representation of either school, who we are or what we believe in," it read. "We are deeply sorry and embarrassed by the events of the night and are working with CIF and St. Paul's to make certain that the parties involved are not only disciplined but are able to make this experience into a life lesson. We all experience conflict and adversity but how we deal with it and who we become as a result is what really matters in the end."
