Suspect with a machete fatally shot by Whittier police

A man allegedly brandishing a machete was fatally shot by Whittier police on Wednesday.

The officer-involved shooting occurred about 6:10 a.m. in the 13400 block of Penn Street.

The suspect, who was in his 30s, died at a hospital, according to the coroner's office. His name was withheld pending notification of his relatives.

Police received calls regarding a man ``acting erratically'' and armed with a machete, and went to the neighborhood to investigate.

``The man charged at them with (the) machete,'' sheriff's Lt. Steve Jauch said. ``Two officers opened fire on the man. He was struck multiple times.''

Sheriff's homicide detectives were sent to assist Whittier police in the investigation. No officers were injured.
