Suspect dies in custody after struggle with Santa Ana police

A burglary suspect died in police custody following a violent struggle with officers in Santa Ana, authorities said.

Officers were called to reports of a burglary just after 9 p.m. Sunday near West 1st and North Clara streets, authorities said. The owner of a nearby business called police to report a burglary in progress.

Responding officers found a man jumping a fence, who led police on a foot chase into an area liquor store. A struggle ensued and the suspect was eventually detained by responding officers.

Officials did not release specific information about the use of force in the incident.

Once in custody, police said the man stopped breathing. Officers attempted CPR at the scene, but the suspect was pronounced dead upon arrival at a local hospital.

Officials said three investigations were underway by homicide detectives, the Santa Ana Police Department's internal affairs division and the Orange County District Attorney's Office.
