Suspect arrested in violent sexual assault at Santa Ana bus stop

A suspect in a violent sexual assault of a woman on a bus bench was arrested Thursday as he was exiting work in Irvine, police said.

Santa Ana Police Detectives arrested, Erick Alvarez Hernandez a 27 year-old resident of Santa Ana, for a sexual assault that occurred on Saturday, January 5, 2019 in the 1000 block of West MacArthur.

The assault was captured on surveillance video from an OCTA bus. This case received extensive media attention and detectives have followed up on numerous tips from the public, since the night of the attack.

The violent assault happened on the sidewalk as several people drove by in the 1000 block of West MacArthur at about 8:30 p.m. on Jan. 5, police said.

Surveillance video posted by the Santa Ana Police Department on YouTube appears to show part of the assault as an OCTA bus pulls up to the bus stop. Police say the suspect was last seen running eastbound from the area.

Authorities released photographs and a sketch rendering of the suspect hoping the community can identify him. He's described as a Hispanic male wearing a Dallas Cowboys #82 jersey.
