Suspect arrested for Chinatown murders

LOS ANGELES, Calif. (FOX 11/CNS) - A 37-year-old man suspected of stabbing two men to death in Chinatown was arrested Friday.

Homicide detectives and an apprehension task force located Vinh Quok Dao about 4:30 p.m. in Rosemead, where he was arrested without incident, police said.

The stabbings occurred about 2:30 p.m. Thursday at the Hop Sing Tong Benevolent Association in the 900 block of North Broadway, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.

Dao entered the private club, of which he was a former member, and "demanded that one of the members known to him give him $400 to pay for vehicle impound fees," according to a police statement.

"When the member refused to cooperate, Dao exhibited a 6-inch Buck- style knife and attacked him," police said

"Another member tried to come to the victim's aid, but Dao also attacked that person. Dao then fled the scene. Both victims died from their wounds."

Police spent the next 24 hours looking for Dao. Officers with a bloodhound combed the area, where a trail of blood led from the club, but did not immediately find Dao.

"The victims are both of Chinese descent and longtime members of the club," police said. "They spent most of their days at the club playing mahjong and visiting with friends."

Their names were withheld pending family notifications.

Detectives plan to present their case to the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office on Tuesday.

Dao recently returned to the Los Angeles area after being away for several years, police said.
