STUDY: One in 5 Americans find workplace environment hostile or threatening

Employees consider the American workplace a hostile environment.

That's the finding from a recent study of more than three thousand workers conducted by the Rand Corporation, Harvard Medical School and UCLA.

Nearly one in every five workers say they face a hostile or threatening work environment and that includes sexual harassment and bullying.

Almost 55 percent say they face unpleasant and potentially hazardous conditions.

Despite public attention on telecommuting, it is still rare. About 78 percent say they're required to be on the job.

Only 38 percent say their jobs offer good prospects for advancement.

Half say they work on their own time to meet job demands.

One bit of good:
58 percent of those surveyed say their bosses are supportive..
56 percent say they have good friends at work.
