Study: Drinking moderate amounts of alcohol linked to longevity
LOS ANGELES, Calif. (FOX 11) - We have known that alcohol in moderation was better than drinking too much. Now, a new study says people who drink a moderate amount are less likely to die of any cause than those who don't drink at all.
Researchers found light drinkers were more than 20-percent less likely to die than "teetotalers". This was particularly true for older people, women and non-Latino whites.
But researchers want to make it clear that heavy drinkers were still nearly 30-percent more likely to die than non-drinkers.
'Light drinking' was characterized as 3 drinks a week or less.
'Heavy drinking' is considered 14 drinks or more a week for men - 7 or more for women.
