Standoff in Long Beach ends with suspect shot to death by police

A standoff in Long Beach ended with the suspect shot to death by police Wednesday evening.

Police said a man with a gun was spotted at about 3:55 p.m. in a white van on Ocean Boulevard. That major artery was closed to vehicle traffic and pedestrians between Magnolia and Pine avenues.

A SWAT team was activated and a negotiator spoke with the suspect, police said. The standoff lasted for a couple of hours. A Long Beach police sergeant confirmed that police shot the suspect at the scene, before a police dog took him down. The suspect was taken to the hospital, where he was declared deceased.

Local media reported that a woman had warned that her husband was armed with guns in front of the Federal Building, which is at 501 W. Ocean Blvd.

The Long Beach Press-Telegram reported that City Hall was shut down.
