Signal Hill apartment fire critically injures man

A man in his 70s was hospitalized in critical condition Monday after he was pulled out of his burning apartment in Signal Hill, authorities said.

The fire was reported at 2:44 a.m. at 2296 Gaviota Ave., Signal Hill police Sgt. R. Hefte said.

The man's apartment was fully engulfed in flames when police arrivedto evacuate residents, Hefte said. He said firefighters extinguished the flames and found the man "pulseless" in the unit, but he was revived and was hospitalized in critical condition. Officials earlier reported that he had died.
