Someone fired at Los Angeles County sheriff's deputies Thursday in Compton, prompting a SWAT response that led to the suspect being shot.

A sheriff's tactical team responded when deputies came under fire about 2:40 p.m. in the area of Aranbe Avenue and Lucien Street, according to Deputy Juanita Navarro-Suarez of the Sheriff's Information Bureau.

The area was contained and at about 4:30 p.m. the suspect, who was seen shirtless and holding what appeared to be a rifle, was shot and wounded in the 2100 block of East Shauer Street, according to the sheriff's department and reports from the scene.

At 4:44 p.m., the Sheriff's Headquarters Bureau announced via Twitter that the suspect had been "neutralized.''

"Assault with a deadly weapon on peace officer suspect has been struck by gunfire, first aid in progress,'' according to the department.

The suspect was taken to a hospital, Navarro-Suarez, but there was no immediate word on his condition.

No deputies were injured.

Sheriff's Homicide Bureau detectives were dispatched to investigate the shooting.
