San Diego 'Friars Fire' fully contained after burning near Fashion Valley mall

SAN DIEGO - As fierce Santa Ana winds whipped across Southern California, firefighters battled multiple wildfires in San Diego County.

On Tuesday afternoon, a fire erupted in San Diego's Mission Valley neighborhood near the popular Fashion Valley mall and homes were threatened in the area. The fire is being called the "Friars Fire."

Evacuations lifted, some roads still closed
- 4 p.m.: All remaining evacuation orders have been lifted. Some roads, including Camino Degrazia and Friars Road, remain closed while crews finish cleanup. Crews will still be in the area mopping up hot spots for the next 4 to 6 hours.
- The fire burned approximately 15 acres along the north end of Friars Road.
Schools to reopen Wednesday
- 2 p.m.: After closing two schools Tuesday afternoon because of the fire, the San Diego County Office Of Education announced the two schools — the Linda Vista campus and the Linda Vista Innovation Center — would reopen on Wednesday, Jan. 22.
Fire contained
- 1:45 p.m.: The Friars Fire has been fully contained after burning around three acres, according to San Diego City Councilmember Raul Campillo and the SDFD. Crews are still working to clean up the area.
Evacuation Order
- 1 p.m.: A mandatory evacuation order was issued in Mission Valley and Linda Vista, as well as some surrounding communities, including the area near the University of San Diego.

San Diego County Office of Education office evacuates
- 12:42 p.m.: The San Diego County of Education said its Linda Vista campus and Linda Vista Innovation Center were being evacuated. Those with appointments or classes were asked to avoid the area.
Fire erupts in Fashion Valley
- 12 p.m.: FOX 5 San Diego reported the brush fire was reported at noon in the 7000 block of Friars Road.
