Red Cross preparing to send more SoCal volunteers for Hurricane Irma relief

With Irma looming on the horizon, the Red Cross is sending even more volunteers to disaster zones.

Hurricane Irma is one of the strongest hurricanes to ever hit the region and all throughout the country, emergency response organizations are preparing for the worst. Volunteers are getting ready to head near the storm's path.

"We hope that we've given you enough to sort of prepare you for it, but it's all going to be very different," said Red Cross Manager Michael Edwards.

In a training session Wednesday, The Red Cross walked nearly 30 new volunteers through disaster relief training .

In the past week and a half since Hurricane Harvey we've seen 300 applicants," said Senior Specialist for Volunteer Engagement Anna Laine.

That's a 33 percent uptick.

For me it was about being there physically," said new volunteer Anizza Barnett.
