Pranks captured on Instagram video leads to local teen arrest

A 14-year-old boy was facing possible criminal charges on Friday after detectives with the sheriff's Santa Clartia Valley Station were alerted to Instagram postings of several thefts and acts of vandalism at Newhall fast food businesses and a bowling alley.

Detectives were pointed to the postings on Monday and the primary suspect, depicted along with those recording the video, was identified soon after, according to the sheriff's department.

Another act of vandalism was posted to Instagram on Tuesday evening and the following day detectives contacted the boy's parents, officials said.

The postings show thefts of food at three fast food restaurants and of a pin at a bowling alley.

A liquor store also was vandalized and one video shows the boy dumping a 7-Eleven Slurpee on his head.

On Thursday, the teen's parents brought him to the station. He was cited and later released back to his parents, according to the sheriff's department.

Authorities did not identify the boy, a resident of the Santa Clarita Valley, because of his age.

The case will be submitted to prosecutors for the possible filing of charges.

"Detectives are continuing their investigation and the detention of additional subjects in the near future is anticipated,'' the sheriff's department said.
