Police investigate woman struck and killed by freight train

A woman was fatally struck by a freight train in Montebello early Friday morning in what police believe was a suicide.

The crash was reported at 1:47 a.m. near the intersection of Montebello and Olympic boulevards.

Police believe the woman, who died at the scene, intentionally placed herself in the path of the train. Her identity was being withheld pending family notification.

The accident and subsequent investigation prompted the closures of Montebello Boulevard, Greenwood Avenue, Maple Avenue and Vail Avenue between Olympic Boulevard and Mines Avenues, police said.

Motorists were advised to use Bluff Road or Garfield Avenue as alternate north-south routes through the city.
