Person killed in shooting in Venice

One person died Monday afternoon after in a shooting in Venice.

The victim died at the scene of the shooting, which was reported about 3:30 p.m. in the area of Fifth Avenue and Broadway Street, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.

"Our victim, who has been identified as 29-year-old Lavell Harris of Los Angeles, was walking on Fifth Avenue near Broadway, two suspects approached him on foot, then they chased him," LAPD Lt. John Radtke said. "He ran northbound on Fifth Avenue, the suspects fired numerous shots at him."

"Homicides in this area are not very common," Radtke said. "This is the first shooting homicide this year.''

No details about what prompted the killing were immediately available. Witnesses reported a suspect fled in "a shiny sedan," according to the LAPD.
