Pacific Park on Santa Monica Pier celebrates 125th anniversary of Ferris wheel

Pacific Park on the Santa Monica Pier is celebrating the 125th anniversary of the Ferris wheel Thursday with free rides on the Pacific Wheel, the world's only solar-powered Ferris wheel.

The Ferris wheel debuted at the Chicago World's Columbian Exposition in 1893.

From 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday, the first 1,893 guests to RSVP at www.pacpark.com/125 will receive a free ride. Riders should bring the printed confirmation to the ticket window next to the Pacific Wheel to redeem for the free ride.

All other riders may purchase a ticket that day or use an Unlimited Ride Wristband, officials say.

A free commemorative 125th anniversary pressed penny is included with the free ride.

Thursday's celebration in Santa Monica will also include light shows and live entertainment at the iconic landmark.

Similar commemorative events are planned for Chicago's Navy Pier.
