One Direction concert closes Hollywood Boulevard

A day after a Russian tourist was stabbed and slashed by an apparent transient man at a Hollywood shopping and entertainment center, a stretch of nearby Hollywood Boulevard was closed for an outdoor evening performance by the group One Direction.

The concert was staged as part of the "Jimmy Kimmel Live'' show amid increased police patrols, Sgt Dave Tyson of the Los Angeles Police Department's Hollywood Station said.

Hollywood Boulevard was closed between Highland Avenue and Orange Drive to accommodate the show, he said.

Tyson expected a large crowd due to the group's popularity among young fans, though he declined to cite numbers.

The concert comes amid concerns over terrorists targeting public events following last week's attacks in Paris that killed more than 100 people, many who were attending a concert.

The street closure was expected to extend into Friday morning, according to the LAPD.
