One dead, one critically injured in plane crash at Whiteman Airport in Pacoima

One man was fatally injured and a boy was critically hurt when a small plane crashed and burned at Whiteman Airport, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department.

The crash took place about 5:10 p.m. at Whiteman Airport, a general aviation airport located at 12653 W. Osborne St., fire department spokeswoman Amy Bastman said.

The plane took off at the airport but experienced an unknown problem that was reported over the radio, then clipped a building, causing it to land upside down, Bastman continued.

Los Angeles County Fire Department personnel were able to extinguish the flames and render emergency help until Los Angeles firefighters responded to the scene.

The victims -- a 12-year-old boy and a 60-year-old man -- were quickly extricated from the wreckage of the Cessna 150L by rescuers, Bastman said.

The 60-year-old man was in cardiac arrest and received CPR, Bastman said. He was listed in grave condition. The 12-year-old boy was critically hurt. Both victims were taken to an area trauma center.

No other injuries were reported.

The crash will be investigated by the National Transportation Safety Board.
