Off-duty LA Sheriff's deputy killed in head-on crash

A 31-year-old Los Angeles County sheriff's deputy was killed and a 20-year-old woman was seriously injured in a head-on collision near Santa Clarita, authorities said today.

The deputy, who lived in Lancaster, was on his way home from work, Los Angeles County Fire Department Dispatch Supervisor Kyle Sandford said.

The collision occurred around 9:40 p.m. Wednesday near the intersection of San Francisquito Canyon Road and Stator Lane, according to the California Highway Patrol.

A CHP investigator said the deputy's southbound vehicle crossed double yellow lines and collided with a vehicle driven by Katelyn Sanders of Green Valley. She was hospitalized with major injuries. The deputy died at a
hospital.

Neither alcohol nor drugs were a factor in the collision, the investigator said.
