Octopus named Inky makes wild escape from aquarium, slips down drain pipe to ocean

(FOX 11) - Inky the octopus made a daring escape from New Zealand's National Aquarium.

The male octopus apparently slipped through a gap in the top of his enclosure, slid across the floor to a 6-inch wide drain pipe and squeezed through to get to the Pacific Ocean.

Aquarium staff determined his escape route after noticing the tracks he left behind.

The aquarium's manager Rob Yarrell told local media that Inky was about the size of a rugby ball, but octopuses can stretch to extremes, enabling them to squeeze into almost any space.

Inky made his break for the ocean several months ago, but the story is just now being made public.

The octopus had been at the aquarium since 2014 when he was brought in by an aquarium volunteer who found him while fishing.

The aquarium's curator of exhibits said at the time, "we have to keep Inky amused or he will get bored."

Hopefully Inky is more entertained now.
