Nun, 70, dies after being struck in Boyle Heights hit-and-run

Authorities on Monday reported the death of a 70-year-old nun who was struck in Boyle Heights by a hit-and-run driver, who remains at large.

Sister Raquel Diaz, director of Religious Education at the Church of Assumption, was in the crosswalk at Winter Street and North Evergreen Avenue when she was struck about 5:20 p.m. Dec. 13 by a white, four-door compact car, possibly a Toyota or Nissan, that was going south on Evergreen, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.

The motorist continued south on Evergreen without stopping after his car hit Diaz, who had been a nun for more than 50 years, police said. Paramedics took Diaz to a hospital, where she died about noon Sunday, said coroner's Assistant Chief Ed Winter.

A description of the suspect was not released, but a reward of up to $25,000 is available to community members who provide information leading to the driver's identification, apprehension and conviction, or "resolution through a civil compromise,'' police said.

LAPD Central Traffic Division detectives urged anyone with information regarding the crash to call them at (213) 833-3713.
