LAPD Issues Tactical Alert Following Gang-Related Shootings In South LA
LOS ANGELES (CNS/FOX 11) - Four shootings in South Los Angeles, three of them gang-related, left one person dead and five others wounded in the span of about five hours, prompting police to go on tactical alert, officers said Sunday.
The first shooting was just after 4 p.m. Saturday at the intersection of Hoover and 81st streets, Officer Bob Bermudez of the Los Angeles Police Department's 77th Street Station said. The shooting was gang-related and may have been connected to a nearby funeral, he said.
Detective David Garrido of the LAPD's Criminal Gang Homicide Division told a videographer at the scene that the victim was in a car stopped at an intersection when a burgundy-colored SUV driven by a female approached, suspects got out and opened fire
The SUV was possibly a Lincoln Navigator, according to Bermudez, who said investigators believe the shooting may have been related to a funeral about eight blocks away in the 8700 block of South Broadway.
The coroner's office identified the victim, who died at the scene, as Anthony Alonzo Cudger, 47, of Los Angeles.
About an hour later, at the intersection of 75th and Figueroa streets, a man in his 20s approached and shot a man in his 40s. The victim took himself to a hospital where he had stable life signs, said Officer Rosario Herrera of the LAPD's Media Relations Section.
The suspect ran away, she said, adding that the motive for the shooting was unclear.
About 9:05 p.m. Friday, a man in his 20s was shot in the torso in the Hyde Park area, Herrera said.
Officers responding to a shooting report found the victim down at the intersection of Hyde Park Boulevard and Brynhurst Avenue, police said.
The man was taken to a hospital, but his condition was unavailable Sunday. That shooting was also considered gang-relate, police said.
About 9:40 p.m. Friday, three people were wounded, one of them critically, at or near a park in the Vermont Square area, police said.
The victims, two males and a female, were walking in the area of Budlong Avenue and 47th Street when a male suspect exited a vehicle and fired numerous rounds at them before fleeing the location, Herrera said.
All three were taken to a hospital. One was in critical condition, although Herrera didn't know which, and the other two were stable.
The LAPD's South Bureau was put on tactical alert after that shooting.
All of the gunfire took place in the 77th Street Station's patrol area.
Under the tactical alert, officers' shifts are extended and they concentrate on priority calls as officers from other divisions step in to
handle other calls.
No arrests were reported in any of the shootings.
