LA to get tough on car owners parking on berms or parkways

LOS ANGELES, Calif. (FOX 11) - Parking enforcement has been warning residents over the past 45 days about the plan to start issuing tickets, and as you might imagine it's not going over well here where parking is already extremely challenging.

In Koreatown, parking is at such a premium that some residents have resorted to unconventional parking spots like using the parkway - the area between the sidewalk and the street.

Since 2011, the city has looked the other way. The city stopped ticketing vehicles after being sued multiple times over alleged violations of the Americans with Disabilities Act. In June, the city revised its policy and beginning Monday, cars will start getting ticketed. It is very unwelcome news for residents like Giovanni Cortez.

"I park in the red at night... and I try to wake up before 8:00am before they enforce and move my car to get a spot."

Cortez says, as the population grows, parking in Koreatown is only getting worse. "Parking is insane here. There is like one two bedroom apartments with 20 people in there. I don't know...I just have to fight for parking I guess."

Frustrated residents are demanding that the city take action.

The city will allow apron parking in driveways, the area between the sidewalk and the street as long as your wheels don't touch the sidewalk or the street. If you get a ticket for parking in the parkway, it will set you back $68 dollars.
