The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department is mourning the loss of a deputy who died in a collision while vacationing in Oregon.

His 11-year-old son, who was also in the vehicle, survived.

Details surrounding the collision are not known. It is currently being investigated by the Polk County Sheriff’s Office.

He is survived by his wife, Louise, and their son.

Gill has worked for the sheriff’s department for 20 years.

A statement posted online by the sheriff’s office says Gill has worked on a variety of assignments, including custody at the North County Correctional Facility, court services at Pasadena Court, patrol at West Hollywood Station, Crescenta Valley Station, and County Services Bureau.

“No matter where he went, Dennis was very well liked by his peers and respected for the extra duties he took on. He received many public commendations for his diligent performance. Dennis was regarded as compassionate, professional, helpful, and respectful person, who was about providing public service with nothing in return,” the statement read.
