Irvine Woman Delivers Newborn On 405 Freeway

(FOX11) An Irvine woman's water broke while she and her family were driving on the 405 Freeway Sunday. Dad called 911 and shortly after a baby girl was delivered on what's known as the busiest highway in the U.S.

Anuradha Suratkal and her baby girl are now safe in the hospital, but this 7 pound, 21.5 inch long newborn has a birth story that is unusual to say the least.

"She's getting another contraction right now. Don't push it. Don't push it," Dad Nagaraj Badavide said while on the the phone with a 911 dispatcher from Orange County Fire Authority.

The family say they had spent the afternoon shopping for baby clothes and was having dinner at one of their favorite restaurants in Artesia when his wife started having contractions.

They started heading toward the hospital, but the baby had different plans. Anuradha's water broke and they had to pull over and call 911.

They waited on the shoulder in the middle of busy Sunday night traffic for EMS to arrive.

The couple's 12-year-old daughter Varsha Badavide was in the front seat trying to help her mother with breathing after her father called 911.

"I kinda felt weird because [cars] were stopping just to see our car and the firefighters," Badavide said.

In the OCFA 911 recording, mom can be heard screaming in the background.

"I think the contractions were bothering her," Badavide said.

By the time paramedics found the family, the baby girl was already on her way into he world.

"They came quick and the baby was delivered in the car. Her head had already popped out before the ambulance got there. And in the end she was delivered nicely," Badavide said.

Nurses say the baby is in good condition, but mom and dad are still waiting to give her the perfect name.
