Inmate who escaped from detention center in Rancho Cucamonga arrested

Authorities located and arrested an inmate who escaped from the West Valley Detention Center in Rancho Cucamonga on Thursday.

The San Bernardino Sheriff's Department said 19-year-old Mario Abraham Tafoya was located and arrested at his residence in San Bernardino around 5:30 a.m. Friday.

Tafoya had escaped from the detention center around 3:22 p.m.Thursday. He was seen running in a north-east direction from the detention center in the area of Etiwanda Avenue and 6th Street shortly thereafter.

Several law enforcement agencies, including the Rancho Cucamonga Police Department, San Bernardino Sheriff's Aviation, and K-9 teams assisted in the search.

Authorities released his image on Thursday, alerting the public that he was to be considered dangerous and the public should not approach him or contact him.

Tafoya was arrested back on Jan. 31, 2019 for assault with a deadly weapon and evading police and disregard for public safety. He will be subsequently charged for the escape.
