Gridlock Rage: Possible solutions for solving traffic problems in Los Angeles

LOS ANGELES, CA (FOX 11) - If you ask just about anyone, one of the best things about living in Southern California? The weather.

One of the worst things? The traffic.

Is it getting better or worse? Phil Shuman has been looking into this problem with some possible solutions.

I love to walk to work. Unfortunately that would require a long trip on the 101 and 405 freeways. So I, like most of you ,get in my car and sit in traffic, a lot of traffic on surface streets and freeways. I wish I could tell you that a major breakthrough was in the works but it is not. If you're able to use mass transit and then figure out how to get to the mass transit ride and then from the drop off point to work you're fortunate if that fits into your lifestyle. Mass transit is expanding.

Carpooling, well that doesn't really work too effectively if you are trying to reduce commute times. . When it comes to moving through the city on surface streets WAZE gives some shortcuts at the risk of upsetting neighborhoods, but for the most of us you just have to crawl and tough it out.

Some intersections have been improved by white glove traffic control officers but there never seems to be enough money to increase their staffing… the city of LA is talking about improving it synchronized light system, which is fine but that's an old idea… important but not innovative.

They've introduced electric car sharing to compliment bike sharing but again it's a tiny percentage of all commuters that would be helpful for. The bottom line is we live in a sprawling spread out city that was designed for automobiles and it works fine if you happen to be driving between say 2 AM and 4 AM otherwise were just too many people and too many cars on the road with no real and insight to the problem.
