Father shoots son attempting to break-in to his home

A man fatally shot his adult son today at their home in the Covina area after the younger man broke in through a glass door, authorities said.

The shooting occurred around 2.30 a.m. in the 19800 block of East Golden Bough Drive in an unincorporated area north of Walnut, said Los Angeles County sheriff's Deputy Juanita Navarro.

The son, who was in his 40s, died at the scene, the sheriff's department reported. His name was not immediately released.

Deputies went to the scene after receiving a 911 call of a family disturbance, said Deputy Sara Rodriguez.

"When the deputies arrived, they discovered the homeowner, a man in his 70s, had shot and killed his live-in son," Rodriguez said. "Homicide detectives have learned the father shot his son after the son forcibly broke into the residence through a large glass door," Rodriguez said. "Homicide detectives are interviewing the mother and father at the Walnut (Sheriff's) Station."

Why the man broke into the home where he lived was not immediately explained.
