Fatal crash under investigation on 10 Freeway in Pomona

A man was killed Tuesday in a crash on the San Bernardino (10) Freeway in Pomona.

The man died about 4:30 a.m. on the westbound 10 Freeway near Fairplex Drive, according to the California Highway Patrol. His name was withheld, pending notification of his relatives.

According to the preliminary investigation, the man was driving a Toyota Corolla on the eastbound 10 Freeway when his car rear-ended a big rig, and the car came to rest near the center divider, CHP Officer Rodrigo Jimenez told FOX 11.

"Moments later, a Toyota Prius in the (eastbound) carpool lane ends up broadsiding the Corolla,'' Jimenez said. "Now, this is where it gets tricky; we're not sure if the driver of the Corolla was standing outside the vehicle when the two cars hit.''

The impact sent the driver of the Corolla onto the westbound side of the freeway, where he died, Jimenez said, adding that it did not appear that he was hit by any westbound vehicles. Two westbound vehicles crashed at the site, possibly when the motorists tried to avoid hitting the body, Jimenez said.

The carpool and No. 1 lanes of the eastbound 10 Freeway and carpool and Nos. 1 and 2 lanes of the westbound 10 Freeway were closed while an investigation was conducted.
