Do you hate your job? You’re not alone

More Americans than ever before are extremely unhappy with their jobs. They dread going to work on a daily basis.

“Our research is telling us that one in five people have left their organizations because of the culture. It’s the toxicity that we’re seeing and hearing about that’s at an all time high,” says Johnny C. Taylor, the President and CEO of the Society for Human Resource Management.

Taylor says the turnover as a result of toxicity has cost American companies $223 billion dollars over the last five years. Toxicity in the workplace is not just sexual harassment and race or age discrimination.

It can be a negative culture where management is not fixing the problems that arise.

Taylor says, “We have bad people managers and that is increasingly something we are hearing about in the workplace.”

So what can employers do?

Taylor says they must invest in training and teaching people to be good people managers.

He says, “Ultimately you can have a great company and a great product, but if you work for a jerk, then that’s what you think about the company and that’s when people are leaving.”

He advises companies to be clear on the kind of culture they want to have and only hire people who fall in alignment with that culture.

“This is what we do, this is our purpose, this is what our morality is all about, these are ethics in our organization. When there is alignment, that means it’s the right person.

If there’s not alignment, no matter how technically qualified the person is, they may not be the right person for you to hire.
