Covina man dies after hours-long standoff with police
COVINA, CA (FOX 11/CNS) - A standoff in Covina between police and a 22-year-old man believed to be armed and holding his 7-month-old daughter with him in the car ended after several hours with the baby in police custody and the suspect dead from an officer-involved shooting, according to reports from the scene.
Video from the scene showed police using a device that caused a cloud, firing shots and taking the baby from the white car. The man was pronounced dead, according to news reports from the scene.
The man's mother, Remi Hamilton, told local news he was Daniel Navarro of Covina.
The standoff at Wingate Park in the 700 block of North Glendora Avenue near East Wingate Street lasted approximately eight hours.
The man made threats to hurt himself, police said.
Covina police negotiated with the suspect and summoned a mental evaluation team to assist a bid to accomplish a peaceful surrender, Marquez said.
